Breast implants is one of the most frequent surgeries in the daily practice of plastic surgery.
It is performed for different reasons, either after removal of a breast cancer or breast hypoplasia situations (undeveloped breast), tuberous breasts (mammary malformation) or descent and involution of the mammary glands. It is a very safe surgery with few complications, which has been practiced for over 40 years now.
Breast implants have been improving quality and safety in adapting new shapes and designs, which give a more natural appearance to the breast. However, these implants also grow old and suffer over time.
When do they need to be replaced by new ones or permanently withdrawn?
There is no expiration date for breast implants.Often they are replaced by not directly causes related to the implant, such as breast damage due to pregnancy or breast significant changes in weight over the years. Sometimes the cause is directly related to the implant, they could break.
These breaks can cause varied symptoms: from breast deformity, light tingling or simply not having any alteration; i.e. a breaking can take place and there is not any seen change or external symptom.
It is therefore recommended to have revisions with your surgeon, at least every two years after breast implant surgery, initiating imaging test every two years from the third year of the operation.
In the event that a breaking is detected in these studies, (there is also the possibility of false positives), a replacement implant is recommended.
This operation is not a medical emergency, although a replacement or an implant withdrawal finally takes place, according to the patient preferences.
